Shaved ice at aloha bar: ‘I never thought I’d see the day’
The Hawaiian shaved ice bar at Aloha has made waves in the industry for its vegan friendly atmosphere, but one customer isn’t too happy with its decision to sell its product.
According to Aloha, they had already been selling vegan ice for over a year before they began serving shaved ice.
But now, the bar is now selling the product in its entirety, with the exception of the toppings, which are all vegan.
“Our customer base is vegan, so that was a really hard decision,” owner Brian Giannakopoulos told HuffPost.
“We just didn’t want to change it, it’s such a big part of our customer base.
But we just felt like, we have to change our product, so we just decided to do it.”
The Hawaiian shaved bar will continue to sell vegan ice at Aloyas main restaurant in Honolulu, as well as other locations in the U.S. and Hawaii.
“I think it’s important to be inclusive of everyone and not just one group of people, especially when it comes to the food,” Giannakis said.
“This is something that we all love, and it’s a part of Hawaiian culture, and we want to bring it to the people that love it, and be really respectful to our customers.”
Aloha has not released any information about how much it will cost to buy vegan ice, but Giannaks says it will probably be “less than it used to be.”
Alohas owner Brian says he is “100 percent” in favor of a more open, honest conversation about food and its health benefits, but he admits that some people will feel a little uncomfortable about it.
“You’re always going to be able to say, ‘You know what?
I don’t really want to be vegan, I don- I don t really want it,'” he said.
“[But] there are some people who will definitely be open to it and I just don’t want it to be something that I feel uncomfortable with, but I’m okay with that.”
